Hampus Modig
Machine Learning Engineer – Credit & RiskMeet Hampus Modig, our Machine Learning Engineer.
What first drew you to machine learning?
I’ve always been interested in optimization and problem solving. During my studies in mathematics and industrial economics, I became more interested in data analytics and how machine learning is a great tool to use for certain problems.
What’s the most exciting part of your work today?
For me, it’s building systems that actually work and make a difference within the organization. It is comparatively easy to just train a machine learning model but to build a reliable, scalable, and trusted ML system requires careful planning and implementation. We don’t build for the sake of building; we build because any improvement in our credit risk models means a fairer and faster experience for our customers. That purpose behind the technology is what really motivates me.
You are passionate about sharing knowledge - where does that come from?
We are building things as a team. It is not about building just a great model, it's about building a team that can build many great models over time. Teaching forces you to understand things deeply, but more importantly it is a good opportunity to get your own ideas challenged and continue to learn. This process comes in many forms, it can be demos, whiteboard sessions, or soon, a master’s thesis project here at Fairlo.
What are you curious about next?
I’m really interested in how we can make machine learning more explainable and transparent. The next big challenge isn’t just making better models - it’s helping people understand them and trust them. And that’s where tech and culture meet again - clarity, openness, and learning together.
