The Fairlo story began thirty years ago with the family of our founders Jimmy and Shamon fleeing political turmoil and ending up in Sweden. Struggling to give her children all that they desired, Jimmy and Shamon’s mother took a small unsecured loan. It seemed like a good deal but it quickly turned sour as the loan increased in size in spite of the continuous payments. Much later, having grown up, the two brothers revisited this incident and it became the spark that ignited the Fairlo vision. The fact that a trusted bank took predatory advantage of their family, when they were the most vulnerable, became the starting point of a quest to create a fair credit service. Since the start about six years ago, we've been working tirelessly to live up to the vision of an honest and easy-to-understand credit service. Without toxic terms, sneaky fine print, and nasty surprises.

What you’ll do

As a Backend Engineer with a Cloud focus at Fairlo, you’ll build the core services that power our financial platform while expanding your skills in AWS. Your primary responsibility will be backend development - designing, building, and optimizing scalable APIs and services - but you’ll also take on an active role in growing our cloud capabilities.

We don’t expect you to already be a cloud expert. Instead, we’re looking for someone who is eager to deepen their AWS knowledge and gradually take ownership of infrastructure tasks alongside experienced colleagues. Over time, you’ll help design and manage secure, reliable, and scalable AWS solutions while continuing to grow as a backend engineer.

In this role, you will:

• Build, maintain, and optimize backend services and APIs (primarily in Node.js, but .NET Core or Java are also relevant).
• Contribute to backend architecture with a strong focus on performance, scalability, and security.
• Learn and apply AWS best practices, taking on tasks such as Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, SAM, or CDK) and platform improvements.
• Collaborate with product, data, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality, user-focused solutions.
• Take ownership of both backend features and infrastructure improvements, helping ensure Fairlo’s platform can grow with us.

Requirements

Must-have:

• Solid experience in backend development (Node.js preferred, .NET Core or Java also welcome).
• Strong grasp of backend architecture, scalability, and performance optimization.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (ideally AWS) and interest in expanding your expertise.
• Experience with version control (Git) and modern development practices.
• Fluent in English and comfortable working in an international team.

Nice-to-have:

• Exposure to AWS services and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, SAM, or CDK).
• Experience designing or consuming APIs, data pipelines, or ETL workflows.
• Knowledge of platform security, monitoring, or observability.
• Previous experience in fintech or other highly regulated environments.
